Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
Question:
Which schools have after school programs and how can I find out
if the school my child attends has one?
Almost every public school in Chicago has some
type of after school program. If you still have more questions after
viewing the information on this website, please contact the school
you are interested in directly and ask to speak with "the administrator
or teacher" in charge of the after school programs at the school.
Question:
What do I do if the school does not have any programs for my
child?
Contact your local church, library, park district
or community based organization. Also research online at: www.chicagokidstart.org
or www.tutormentorconnection.org
Question:
Is there a fee for any of the after school programs?
It depends on the program, but most programs
sponsored by the Chicago Public Schools central office are free.
Schools sometimes develop additional programs that they fund locally
and may have a sliding fee-scale system.
Question:
Will my child receive any meals or snacks during the after school
programs?
Depends on the school. The school principal has
to fill out a form and formally request it from the Office of Food
Services. Food Services will determine eligibility. Two-thirds of
schools currently provide a snack or third meal.
Question:
How many different types of after school programs does each school
provide?
Every school is different. Almost all schools
provide some type of academic tutoring support and several others
also provide enrichment, cultural arts and recreational activities.
Question:
Is there any Federal funding for after school programs?
Sometimes schools will use discretionary federal
funds to supplement their after school program budget, but the primary
source of funding is local.
Question:
What information do I need to register my child for an after
school program?
Contact your local school and ask for the person
in charge of after school programming.
Question:
Is there transportation to get my child to and from an after
school program?
No. Sometimes an individual school may have raised
money for this service but most have not. Families must make their
own arrangements.
Question:
What grades does After School accommodate?
K-12, but again subject to individual school
design.
Question:
Who are the After School instructors?
Mostly teachers, but sometimes paraprofessionals
or outside professionals depending on the subject matter or activities
taught.
